What is Turbidity?

Particles suspended within a fluid, often invisible to the naked eye, cause cloudiness or haziness, called turbidity. Measuring turbidity is one of the most important water quality tests. A large concentration of particles in water (high turbidity) requires treatment of the water to prevent a negative affect on taste and appearance.

iHow is Turbidity Measured?

The most recent method to measure turbidity is the nephelometric method, measured in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). The nephelometric method involves shining light into a sample and recording the light scattered at 90 degrees to the light path. There are two main light sources approved for this method, the international standard uses an 800nm infrared light source whilst the US EPA uses a tungsten white light source.

The Advantages of the T20 Turbidity Meter

The T20, available in benchtop or autosampler configuration, measures turbidity down to 0.01 NTU, making it ideal for water sample analysis. In the proprietary flow cell the sample enters and exits through the bottom of the cell, preventing particles being deposited in the cell.

The T20 requires only 15ml of sample. This volume can be returned to its original sample vessel, allowing multi-parameter analysis such as pH, conductivity, alkalinity, colour, fluoride and turbidity all-in-one system from a 50mL tube. The flow cell is not removable, eliminating potential damage that could affect results.

The method conforms to EPA 180.1, ASTM D1889, and Standard Method 2130 B (White Light); ISO 7027 and EN27027 (Infrared).

Why Does Mantech’s Automated Turbidity Work so Well

  • The sample is mixed to ensure homogeneity
  • The sample fills the flow cell from the bottom to the top. After the sample is pumped into the flow cell, a unique “clear bubbles” method is employed.
  • Stability is determined by averaging and %CV. If the turbidity is >1.5 NTU, the three successive readings must have CV of <2%. If turbidity is <1.5 NTU, three successive readings must have CV of <10%. The process continues for up to 6 repeats at which time the reading is taken.
  • The sample is returned to the sample cup to eliminate dilution effects. The integrity of the sample is maintained, allowing additional parameters to be measured after turbidity analysis is complete.
  • Calibrations are stable. a stability of <5% CV for each standard.
  • The IntelliRinse technology ensures the cell is rinsed until the meter reading reaches a defined value, to a maximum of 6 rinse cycles.
