Sensor Monitoring Oxygen Generated on Mars

The 2020 NASA mission to Mars included equipment from PyroScience in the payload. NASA’s Perseverance Rover robot that was deployed on the surface was fitted with the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE). This unit tested a method for future explorers to produce oxygen from the carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere. The MOXIE unit featured an integrated  PyroScience FDO2 oxygen gas sensor.

The size of a lunchbox, MOXIE generated the same amount of oxygen as a small tree. NASA estimate a scaled up version the size of a chest freezer could create enough oxygen to sustain 100 crew members on Mars.
