BioSystems Y15 at Nyetimber

Nyetimber vineyards are spread across Sussex, Hampshire and Kent with vines perfectly suited to the greensand and chalk soils.

The climate of the gentle south-facing slopes allows for slow ripening of the grapes, allowing optimum levels of ripeness and acidity to produce complex and finessed wines.

The vineyards are operated on a sustainable basis with managed native broadleaved woodlands, hedgerows, wildflower meadows and wildlife corridors.

The globally acclaimed Nyetimber wines are crafted in the pressing centre and winery according to the traditional method using only estate-grown grapes.

In search of greater efficiency in the laboratory Nyetimber contacted QCL, a distributor that has been supplying UK food and drink manufacturers with equipment for QC testing for over 40 years, and purchased the BioSystems Y15 to enhance the analytical capabilities of their inhouse laboratory.

The Y15 is a compact, robust automated wine analyzer featuring continuous sample loading to streamline laboratory tasks. Using enzymatic techniques, the Y15 can measure over 25 quality parameters including organic acids, sugars and ions. Its multiple configuration options allow it to measure different sample types simultaneously. The Y15 is used in hundreds of wineries across the world and is renowned as a real workhorse in the industry.

Nyetimber Laboratory Technician, Josephine Smart, outlined the benefits that have been seen since the analyser was installed:

“The Y15 system enables us to perform multiple analyses simultaneously, significantly improving efficiency and allowing staff to focus on other critical tasks while the tests run. The ability to view all results in one centralized location and in real time greatly enhances time management and supports effective troubleshooting when necessary.

Visualizing quality control data over time, particularly in graphical form, provides greater confidence in the accuracy and reliability of our reported results. The system is user-friendly and accessible which facilitates the training of additional laboratory staff, which is essential during peak periods.”
